Membership Clarification

This is not a statement about salvation but about organizational health. If at one time you had placed your membership with the Athens Church of Christ but have not attended regularly for the past year or longer, you are no longer considered a member of the congregation. This may not apply to those who are unable to attend due to health, mobility, or other constraints; if this describes your situation, please contact the church so that we might clarify this statement and confirm your ongoing membership.

While this statement is abrupt, it is necessary. The current health and condition of the congregation require identification of actual members so the elders might make decisions and take action regarding the future of the congregation.

The bylaws of the Athens Church of Christ (approved by the board on May 8, 2018) define members as those who have become Christians according to the biblical teachings regarding salvation, including being baptized by immersion for the forgiveness of sins, and who have specifically placed their membership with “a declaration of intent to submit to the leadership of the elders of the Athens Church of Christ and to participate in the life and ministry of the church by attending, serving, and giving” (Article III, Membership, section 1). Further, the bylaws stipulate that “No person shall have membership voting privilege who has transferred membership to another church or congregation, or who is not faithful in attendance” (Article III, Membership, section 2).

The Athens Church of Christ will continue to welcome every individual into our worship gatherings and other programs and events. While the congregation has allowed nonmembers and others who do not share our theological and doctrinal views to participate, it will continue to do so only as long as those differences do not undermine the teaching, practice, reputation, or unity of this congregation. However, very simply, participation does not establish membership.

Copies of the bylaws are available by request. Please direct all questions to Bruce Stoker and Jeff Wallace through the church by phone (740-593-7414) or by email (elders@athenscc.net).
